How do I deal with it? Hmm. Mostly, I accept it, wait, and ask it (writer's block) what lesson it has for me. Once it answers, then I can usually move forward.(less)

Moving these inner conversations outward is a spiritual discipline for me--one that makes me a better person than I might otherwise be.

Even as I'm grateful for the words that help me articulate the inner world of ideas, I find words frustrating for their lack of texture and complexity. Somewhere between this gratitude and frustration, writing happens.(less)

Goodbye, David

On Reading David Brooks in Divided Times David Brooks wrote his final column for the New York Times  this morning. It’s a brilliant column, as I have come to expect, but I felt an ill-defined blend of inspiration and sadness as I read it. After twenty-two years of inviting us to think carefully about complexity, Brooks is heading off to some new, yet unnamed professional adventure — one I will be Read more of this blog post »

Embodying Integration by Megan Anna Neff
"Absolutely LOVED this book. As one of the endorsers said it is both 'theologically and psychologically sophisticated'.

However, rather then being focused on dry principles and theoretical analysis of what it means to integrate Christian faith and psy" Read more of this review »

“Every Christian must be a broken person. To enter the kingdom, we must acknowledge that the inner peace we yearn for can never come by our own efforts but only by admitting we are powerless to conquer our self-centeredness and by turning over the rule of our life to Christ. Our sinful hearts show themselves through what we do and what we fail to do. We end up broken not only because we are victims but also because we have hearts of rebellion and stubborn independence.”

“Prayer assumes need. “Prayer and helplessness are inseparable.”116 Jesus described this in a parable of two churchgoers in Luke 18. One man, a religious leader, pronounced his self-sufficiency, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income” (Luke 18:11-12). The other, a tax collector, prayed a simpler prayer: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” (Luke 18:13). The tax collector knew more about prayer than the religious leader did. Prayer requires a humble awareness of our need for God.”
