Well, we come in alone, wailing mostly, and go out alone. So being here and here right now always mattered to me. These short memoirs are a compilation, a mishmash really of a middle class upbringing in the 'Jersey burbs,' starting at the dawn of rock and roll music and ending with the arrival of the Apple Macintosh. Avoiding a harsh version of reality is a fight worth having. A bartender with his own restaurant, or the other way around, once told me "everybody's gotta die" as we traded frozen shots of tequila - that may have been the moment I stopped consuming alcohol for good. Die, of course. That way, no way.(less)

We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas
"The writing was great, and there was even a part where I cried (an amazing feat in itself). There were profound moments, but Honestly, I just didn’t care about the characters. It felt a lot like reading a biography—not very emotionally engaging."

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
John Lennon

“Dear future generations: Please accept our apologies. We were rolling drunk on petroleum.”
Kurt Vonnegut

Joni Mitchell
“And the seasons they go 'round and 'round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game.”
Joni Mitchell, The Circle Game

“Writing is the only way I have to explain my own life to myself.”
