Still, he and the cult he created continue to fascinate, not because of the brutality - as ghastly as the acts were, there have been much worse in the last half century - but because of the weird, demonic hold Manson had on his followers, even after being locked away. Remember Squeaky Fromme trying to kill Gerald Ford?

Every detail, every second of those awful nights in 1969 have been analyzed and reported. Tarantino even twisted a new ending to the Mason saga in his "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" movie. For all but the most decrepit of Boomers the hippie movement is an odd blip in history, a curious mass psychosis that made people think orgies in the dirt were something other than ancient pagan rituals; that somehow made people believe, even to this day, that Woodstock was not a miserable, mud-soaked campout with boring and off-key music. Why on earth did we need another book on Manson?

Well, it turns out much of the narrative in the previous books was just plain wrong. Other parts were clearly manipulated. According to this book, Vincent Bugliosi, Manson prosecutor and author of "Helter Skelter" was one of the most corrupt and unstable men in Los Angeles. We also learn from author Tom O'Neill that the Manson Family should have been in jail for stealing cars weeks before the Tate/LaBianca murders. The fact that they were set free after a massive raid is one of many strange incidents O'Neill went to great lengths to cover. It's a fascinating read, even if the ending is unsatisfying.

And that is the book's biggest flaw and greatest gift. You think you are about to find some revelation about the Manson murders, some grand conspiracy that makes sense of the unexplainable. To some extent O'Neill gets there. It turns out copious amounts of LSD mixed with amphetamines, hypnotic repetition, and social isolation drive you more than a little crazy and can lead young adults to stab people in their homes and then play in their blood. But that's not new. What is new are the shady characters with pseudo-scientific interests who had weird relationships with Manson, and all the documents that mysteriously disappeared during O'Neill's reporting. Even with that, though, the mystery never gets solved.

A quarter of the way through, you realize that this isn't a book about Manson at all: it's a story of obsession and the slow-motion madness that engulfs a writer, a condition O'Neill still doesn't seem to recognize. His Manson story started out as a magazine assignment in 1999, one with a three-month deadline. O'Neill's book was published in 2019, 20 years later after he had missed so many deadlines that the magazine went out of business and his original book publisher canceled his contract and sued him for a hefty advance. If you're not a nonfiction writer, you can't fully understand how crazy that is. Missing deadlines sends most of us into sleepless fits of panic. In the 37 books I've written I had to request an extension of one month one time to clarify some facts. I felt like it was a moral failing, as if I had insulted my publisher, editor, agent, wife, children, and ancestors. I averaged about four hours of sleep a night until I finished and filed that manuscript. If you've worked in news, you know that deadlines are sacrosanct. Miss one or two and you will be doing something else soon.

But O'Neill ran down one rabbit hole after another, chasing threads that twisted and curled and ultimately just ended, frayed and flapping in the breeze. You're reading along thinking, surely this is the key, the connection that pulls it all together, but that turns out to be another dead end. All the stories are fascinating - the stuff about Jolly West and the CIA hypnosis and LSD experiments are a book unto themselves - but after a while you feel like one of Manson's groupies, winding along on a trip that seems cool and free until the soap runs out and you wake up in a cell, smelly and gross and wondering what you've done with your life.

O'Neill had to have felt that way many times as this story consumed him. How could he not? That the book exists at all is a miracle. But it is a cautionary tale. Not all obsessions end with you eating dust and dodging rats at the Spahn Movie Ranch. Some, in fact most in our business, end with you staring at a blinking cursor on a blank screen surrounded by thousands of pages of notes, alone with your fear and your deadline. That is what drives writers to drink, lust, lash out, and in some cases take their own lives.

O'Neill got through the other side with a book that is worth your time. Just don't expect a tidy bow at the end. Two decades of reporting leaves a bit of a mess. ...more

At the time, I felt righteous indignation, but also a sense of pride that I lived in America. Those awful commies in the East and their poor, subjugated citizens screamed out on every page. There was no more stark reminder of why our system was good and theirs was bad. A couple of years later when President Reagan called the USSR an "evil empire" my mind went back to Orwell and the plight of Winston Smith and his love, Julia.

Last Christmas, my youngest son gave me another copy of 1984. The year before, I had given him a t-shirt with the creepy Big Brother eye that said "Make Orwell Fiction Again." For perspective, he is an incredibly hard worker, logging more hours and being far more diligent than I was at his age. But I had owned three homes and started two businesses by the time I was his age now. He still rents an apartment with roommates and struggles to make ends meet. His furniture is used, his clothes purchased from thrift shops, and because he has a preexisting medical condition, he is uninsured, despite endless promises that this problem would be solved. It should surprise no one that his politics border on revolutionary.

I finally got around to rereading 1984 this month, and it left me so profoundly sad that I spent a full morning in prayer to get out of my funk. No longer do we look to others to see the horrors of Orwell's prescient mind. They are right in front of us. Julia worked in the fiction department of Oceana, where machines wrote works of fiction by rearranging characters and plots - all with the State as the ultimate god and hero - books that everyone read, not to expand the mind, but to narrow it. I saw a recent Ivy League graduate bragging that all his papers had been written by AI, and on my last visit to Books-a-Million, the front table might as well have been created by Oceana's shlock machine.

"Hate Week" could be any of the summer riots of the last two decades. "Newspeak" is available in any DEI document in the country, and can always be found in the AP Style Guide.

Just as O'Brian bragged about in his interrogations of Winston, genders are being eliminated and procreation minimized. "All children will be removed from the mother and taken over by the State immediately after weaning."

Wars change on a dime with no winners and endless expense, just as in Oceana, which went from being at war with Eurasia to Eastasia, during the middle of a war rally. On the spot, posters and banners were torn down and replaced, and the vitriolic chants went on as if nothing had changed. In fact, Winston had to go back to work to make sure all previous stories had been "updated" so that the war "had always been with Eastasia."

To my eternal shame, I stood like Winston and Julia and followed the orders of the metallic voice on the telescreen as it commanded me to put on a mask and have a chemical injected into my veins. Just as they, I feared repercussions, only in my case it was simply the potential loss of a job or friends or social standing, not a wharf rat eating my face. Still, like Winston in the beginning, I recognized the orders, and those who gave them for what they were.

I will spend the rest of my days atoning for those sins.

Of course, 1984 is no longer required reading in high school or college - I graduated in 1980 and 1984 respectively - because, as Orwell wrote, "Ignorance is Strength." But I must thank my son for giving me another copy. And I must implore all of you: do likewise. Buy two copies to give away this year and make the recipient promise you that it will be read.
