As I continued researching, it became clear that it needed to be told, as it was of great historical value. The challenge became how to tell it. I decided to write a novel to use creativity in areas where there was simply no information available. I explain further in the "Author's Notes" section at the end of the book.(less)

I make sure when I return I am in a quiet place, at night or early in the morning when everyone at home is asleep. Sometimes, I do continue thinking during the day about how to break the block. I even keep a notebook by my bed in case I come up with an idea while sleeping. Crazy, but it has happened before, and I do not want to miss the opportunity, if it comes up! I also write "around the block," e.g., scenes that I know will take place anyways.(less)

When I was a child growing up in Puerto Rico, there was nothing scarier to me than a lose juey, the taíno name for the native succulent blue crab.

With their pointed eyes, and their claws displayed as mighty weaponry, jueyes can be feisty and unpredictable creatures. They look like they’d snap at you any

“No person … shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law …
- Fifth Amendment, United States Constitution”
Yasmin Tirado-Chiodini, Antonio's Will

“Pardon me for this resolution … I know that this will be a disgrace that I bring to my people, but I cannot help it. Love is the blame for it. I go in peace ... pray for me ... good-bye all.”
Yasmin Tirado-Chiodini, Antonio's Will

“Antonio could not stop thinking about Dean Fiero’s words during his welcoming speech, “Look to your left; now to your right. One of you will not be here in 1915!” These words were used to intimidate freshman law students to draw their attention to the importance of being diligent in their forthcoming studies. They still are.”

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

“If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.”
Mark Twain

“If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”
J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
Steve Jobs
