I'm a financial crime consultant who suddenly decided some time ago that my dream was to write fiction. My debut novel, Mickey Take, features an ex-banker who throws in the towel on his "big" City job, but that's where the similarity ends. Between writing crime thrillers and volunteering as the financial controller of the annual New Ways Advent Ball (newways.org.uk), I periodically venture back into the London commuter scene. In contrast, Michael Field, the protagonist and primary narrator of Mickey Take, is perhaps less likely to resume his career in financial services anytime soon! ...more

Interruptions are at best a double-edged sword for writers, especially difficult given the need to remain active in our networks and sustain our marketing efforts. Setting aside quality time, and in sufficient quantity, can be difficult. One of my frequent references as a writer is the importance of achieving and maintaining momentum. Whether that's whilst writing a first draft or editing, getting into a "zone" that can sustain a level of creativity and focus for days (if not weeks) at a time, I find vital, not only to achieve the goal but also in how the journey feels. All of that said, it's good to be able to focus on something completely different from time to time. For me, a long dog-walk or time spent gardening are my distractions of choice. OK, now back to that editing!(less)

Better to go for a long walk with the dog! On a practical level, if I'm at a crossroads and procrastination starts kicking in I would take one of my characters to one side and "interview them" to get more insight into what makes them tick.(less)

My name is Michael Field. If you thought I was going to say: My name is Michael Caine, you’d be wrong. The only thing we’ve got in common, some say, is he talks like me. I suppose you’ll be the judge of that. Anyway, call me Mickey.
I’m here in my local. About nine miles east of a place I’ve affectionately dubbed Bleak House. I’ve Read more of this blog post »

“Well, if I dreamt at all, my would-be tormentors must have smelled the scotch and decided I was too inebriated to take any notice of them and buggered off to screw up someone else’s night.”
Steven Hayward, Mickey Take: When a debt goes bad...

“Today, I’m sitting in the corner chair and feeling very conspicuous. First, because I’m not wearing a velour tracksuit in a choice of pastel shades, and second because I’m not a woman. You might even say, thirdly I’m over the age of twenty-five – and mentally over the age of twelve, but that would just be nasty.”
Steven Hayward, Mickey Take: When a debt goes bad...

“My subconscious seems to like the darkness. I can sense it shifting a gear as the visual distractions are extinguished. It works better; preferring the low volume hum of the sprawling city at night in its subservience to the sounds of nature.”
