D.A. (Daisy) Hickman, an avid student of culture and society, writes to connect more deeply to the complexities of the human condition. Her new memoir, A Happy Truth: Last Dogs Aren't Always Last, is a heartwarming read filled with vivid scenes and lasting insights. "Loving them, letting them go, and then finding a way to begin anew, it all comes down to finding the courage to love again. Opening the door to discovery and joy is the secret."

Hickman's 2015 memoir, The Silence of Morning: A Memoir of Time Undone, followed a first book from William Morrow about growing up "prairie-wise" (Always Returning: The Wisdom of Place, second edition, 2014). Also a poet, Hickman published Ancients of the Earth: Poems of Time in 2017. "Too often," she no

DECEMBER 2024: A Fabled Month

Will you love me in December as you do in May?” ― Jack Kerouac

We all grow up with different experiences linked to the final month of the year. Many are memorable; many turn into a morass of mixed feelings that we never quite sort through. Yet assumptions are made. We expect to feel or act a “certain way,” right? And when we don’t, or when others seem out of touch with cultural expectations, maybe

“Certain of a far deeper story of existence that poetically reveals priorities and values and truth, I knew this was the sweet spot for inspired decision-making. -- Daisy A. Hickman”
Daisy A. Hickman, A Happy Truth: Last Dogs Aren't Always Last

“Something unites us, willingly or otherwise, with animals; studying us closely, they 'get us'. Perceiving what words fail to convey, gradually, our words also begin to take on value--they listen, learn, try to understand, and respond. But our real intentions are assuredly revealed by tone of voice, behavior, and history together.”
Daisy A. Hickman, A Happy Truth: Last Dogs Aren't Always Last

“Pets surely hold the key to unlocking the human spirit. They even remind us to stop worrying—especially about the next pet. Watching a sleeping animal, we know our worries are mostly in vain. We know the real story is about love. And that’s a very happy truth.”

Daisy Hickman Hi Mark, thanks so much for your message which I'm just now seeing! Your journey with dogs and cats sounds wonderful. We do shed a lot of tears over these precious animals ... but they are always so worth it. I hope you've had a chance to check out A Happy Truth ... it's all about the ups and downs of loving them, losing them, and somehow beginning anew. Warm wishes for 2020! -- dh

Mark André Very nice to meet you Daisy, and thank you for the friend invite. I read some of the reviews of your new book and they all sounded very positive.
I grew up with cats, but when I met the woman who became my wife, she was a dog person. Since I was moving into her house I became a dog person too. We had three dogs together, Bartok, Zeno and Molly Bloom, over a period of 25 years. When we buried the last dog in the garden I decided I had had enough. About two weeks later I discovered a mother cat and four kittens under our back porch. We started feeding them and building little house to keep them out of the sun. When the weather changed we tricked them into the house. That was seven years ago. We now keep 8 cats, Mommy cat, Mittens, Ulysses, Tristan, Isolde (Izzy), Junior, Baby, and Gilberte in the house and two Ginger/Pumpkin and Odette under the porch, all rescues. I’ve shed more tears burying cats and dogs than any other event in my life. It is a great capacity to love, to loose, and then to love again. ☮️
Ps. The picture I use as my avatar was not my cat. He was an old alley tom cat that befriend us for about a year. One day after his supper he walked across the alley and I never saw him again. I probably cried for him too.
Pss. I apologize for putting this here. Author sites are different and I’ve never understood how to send private messages.
