Jessica Evans cut her writer’s teeth in various fan fiction forums starting at fifteen. Although she discovered Jane Austen’s novels as a college sophomore, she didn’t begin writing Austenesque until several years later. The Muse: A Pride and Prejudice Variation is her debut novel.

Jessica teaches sixth grade English in a New York City public school. In her spare time, she reads a lot of romance, fantasy, and Young Adult literature, enjoys walks in Prospect Park, and cooks and eats as healthily as possible. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

I deal with writer's block in one of two ways.

The first is probably not how writers should deal with a lack of inspiration: I take a break. I come back to the writing when I think I have something to write. The problem with this is that sometimes those breaks can last for days, weeks, months, even years! So I don't recommend that method.

The second way is the more productive way. If I'm not getting any ideas or I've written myself into a corner, I reread what I've written. I'll edit or revise. The brain is a weird mechanism. A lot of times, to get myself into the groove of writing, I need to get into the groove of writing, if that makes sense. Just putting my head into a writing space is sometimes enough to get ideas flowing.(less)

Another Year Older

Whelp, it’s happened.

I had another birthday: the big three-four. I’m officially in my mid-thirties. Somehow, this scares me more than when I turned thirty proper.

My birthday is my own personal New Year’s celebration. It’s a time to get reflective, to think of all that’s happened to me in the year and to think ahead to the next. I’ve gotta say 33 was a heckuva year. One of the best so far.

First,
