March is recognized nationally as Women's History Month, and celebration starts right now with Fact or Fiction question - Are Men More Competitive than Women?
As a reasonably competitive woman who is married to a very uncompetitive man, I would answer: NO.
BUT, my household, as diverse as it may be, is not enough to prove one way or another, so I turned to science. In 2008, researchers Uri Gneezy and John List from the University of Chicago and Kenneth Leonard from Columbia University had published their findings about gender differences in selecting into competitive environments.
They performed a controlled experiment across two distinct societies: the Maasai, a patriarchal society in Tanzania and the Khasi, matrilineal society in India. The findings? Men in the patriarchal society were more competitive than women in that society, and women were more competitive than men in the matriarchal society. AND Khasi women choose to compete lightly more often than Maasai men.
Sadly, many stereotypes affect our society and shape a biased status quo, that takes years to contradict or change. A status quo bias also responsible for false assumptions such as men are better at math, women are more emotional, men are less talkative, and women are more intuitive- to name a few.
These stereotypes are damaging because they hold us back, don’t allow us to explore our FULL POTENTIAL, follow our instincts, express ourselves and choose what is right for us.
So, at least during Women's History Month, forget every assumption, erase every label, and question every theory you held about women and start fresh.
