I’d like to share with one of the best art pieces I had seen recently. Cayla Hassett, a junior at Next Gen Academy in Albuquerque, NM has won 3rd place in the UNESCO 2016 WORLDWIDE “Sustainable Development Goals” Competition. To enter the competition, everyone age fourteen to young adults must choose one of the goals, research it, and provide a solution. These ideas can be represented through an art piece, an essay, or a video.
Cayla Hassett was one out of the nine winners with the art piece entitled: 10 HOURS = 3,472 WOMEN.
Here is the explanation she wrote:
“Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This is a brutal process that occurs in many communities for multiple reasons such as purification and increasing femininity. For my piece, I created a rose that represents how these girls are being torn and stitched, most times against their will. The best way to solve this issue would be to create awareness to the fact that this is happening and causing serious health problems for women, all because they need to remain “pure before marriage”.
Organizations, such as the Orchid Project, work in the communities in Africa to show them the harmful effects and to create mass abandonment. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), within the ten hours it took to create this piece, 3,472 females in Africa were at risk of FGM, and within the time it took you to read this, 6 more women were added to that growing number.“
