The most famous walls in the world were built thousands of years ago. The Walls of Troy date as far back as the 13th century and they are some of the oldest walls that survive today. The Great Wall of China that was built in the 7th century BC is possibly the most famous fortification in the world. World’s walls were built to protect areas from enemies or stop residents of one side of the wall to escape to the other side.

Walls take a long time to build, but a very short time to break down or pass-through, under or above. There wasn’t a wall in the history of the world that had successfully replaced a long lasting political, social or economic solution.

Far too many years the United States’ way of dealing with illegal immigration was not dealing with it, and building a wall is a continuation of the same do-nothing policy. A wall is not a solution that is based on agreement, but it is a one side provocative act that is doomed to fail.

We need a sensible solution for illegal immigration, which doesn’t necessarily arrive from the Mexican border. In fact, the Mexican border is perhaps the most patrolled and highly watched over border anywhere in the world between two countries that are not only in peace but linked by extensive trade treaties.

There are many reasonable and humane solutions for illegal immigration such as creating a much more effective job program that will open opportunities to non-U.S. workers so they would no longer have to enter the U.S. illegally, improve work visa program, strengthen interior enforcement, eliminate illegal immigration rewards (citizenship to babies of illegals born within the US), and finally, legalizing, in a sensible way, illegals that are already here.

We should not become another brick in wall; we should always demand long lasting solutions.
