My Monday thank you goes to comedian, singer, dancer, director, screenwriter, author, and businesswoman, Tracey Ullman, who was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England and emigrated to the United Sates in 1985.
Ullman’s early career initiated when she appeared on British television sketch comedy shows A Kick Up the Eighties, and Three of a Kind. In 1983, she released an album You Broke My Heart in 17 Places, and the song, “They Don’t Know,” became a hit in the United States in 1984. A year later, Ullman appeared in the drama Plenty with Meryl Streep. Her comedy series The Tracey Ullman Show, debuted in 1987, won several Emmy Award wins.
After her show ended, Tracey focused on films and had roles in Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Household Saints, and Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway. Her next TV show, Tracey Takes On, received six Emmy Awards, and eight other awards.
In 2007, she was naturalized U.S. citizen, and she used her series, State of the Union, to look at her new home country with themed episodes on contemporary issues, such as immigration. Her sketch Asma Kasim "The Biggest Star in Malawi" captures the condition of modern American society in one minute and twenty seconds, and cannot be funnier.
At the beginning of the year, Ullman returned to BBC1 with a six part comedy series. According to German media, her spoof of Merkel is the best in the world.
I have a special place in my heart for Tracey Ullman. In the darkest days of my legal high-skilled immigration to the United States, when things got really tough and a solution seemed to be unreachable, I would watch her sketches. For a few moments, I didn’t think about the challenges I had to overcome or the uncertain future. I just laughed.
Charlie Chaplin said: “Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain.” I think that making people laugh is the greatest gift someone can ever offer.
