On March 24th, Indiana’s governor, Mike Pence, signed a bill that outperformed his state’s already restrictive abortion rules by placing new restraints on both women and doctors.
From all the disturbing restrictions under the HB1337 legislation, I find most alarming the clause that bans women from seeking an abortion if they discover their fetus has genetic abnormalities.
The fact that Indiana’s lawmakers dismiss and ignore maternal instincts is despicable, and the governor’s reasoning to the law is not only irrational but also infuriates.
Mr. Pence said: “Some of my most precious moments as governor have been with families of children with disabilities, especially those raising children with Down syndrome.”
That makes sense, because everyone knows that eating a burger at a fast food parlor in the middle of nowhere is exactly the same as eating it every day because you cannot afford something else.
Under the law “a miscarried or aborted fetus must be interred or cremated by a facility having possession of the remains,” however, because fertilized eggs can be expelled during a woman's period any period could potentially be a miscarriage without knowledge.
Therefore, on March 28th, a Facebook page Periods for Pence urged women to call the legislators and the governor and provide updates about their menstrual cycle.
The new law will go into effect July 1. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky plans to request a preliminary injunction to block the new restrictions.
I hope that until July 1st Indiana’s legislators and the governor's social media and phone lines will remain busy 24/7. clearly, when they have a free time, they have no idea what to do with it.
