The presidential race has brought with it a new wave of nativism and bigotry, which is the opposite of what elections should signify. Every four years we get to exercise a right, which is unobtainable in every country and should never be taken for granted, to replace our existing administration. Elections hold a promise of a better future, progress and positive change.
However, over the last six months it seems like the leading republican candidates are busy protecting the interests of native-born by turning them against immigrants. In America, most native-born are children or grandchildren of immigrants and for this reason I consider those actions especially alarming.
It took America almost a century to cement its superpower position and sustain its competitive advantage, and it did it thanks to the people. All people: immigrants and native-born. Yet now, after years of neglect, we are facing a failing immigration system, dysfunctional, and unjust that works against America’s best interest. The elections’ rhetoric of couple of candidates against immigrants is an excellent example of the way the immigration system’s fiasco works against us.
We hear a lot about immigration reform, but many people are unsure of what immigration reform is all about, what the value proposition is or in what way it could influence both immigrants and native-born. Just like this 1923 cartoon suggests, a better understanding comes through education.
Federation for American Immigration Reform is a “non-profit, non-partisan organization of concerned individuals who believe that the United States immigration laws must be reformed to better serve the needs of current and future generations.” Their goal is “to educate and increase public awareness of immigration issues, present solutions, hold leaders accountable for answers, and ensure the public's voice is heard.”
