My Monday’s hero is Peggy Cherng the co-chair and co-chief executive of Panda Express Restaurant Group who was born in Burma and raised in Hong Kong. She moved to the United States for college, and in Baker University, Kansas she met her husband Andrew. In 1971, she earned her B.S. degree in applied mathematics from Oregon State University, and her M.S. in Computer Science and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
In 1982, after the death of her father-in-law, Peggy joined Andrew to run the family business- a restaurant in Pasadena called Panda Inn. A year later, the manager of Glendale Galleria shopping mall, suggested the Cherngs to open a Chinese fast-food stand in the mall’s food court. The Panda Express was launched in October 1983.
Today, Panda Express operates 1,800 restaurants and employs 26,000 people. The privately held company reached $2.2 billion in revenue in 2014.
The company considered going public in the 1990s, but didn’t because it wasn’t aligned with the business' philosophy, which focused on the people and food and less on profits. Panda Express invests in employees’ personal development, and they can learn skills such as public speaking and self-defense at the University of Panda. The company promotes from within- Cherng said: "You have to evolve, you can't stay still.”
Peggy Cherng could have continued working in her field and be successful, but she took a leap of faith and followed her heart. Many times, we choose to follow a familiar path because it is easier than exploring other options.
In the book, P.S. I Love You, H. Jackson Brown’s mother says: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”
I agree. Throughout the years I explored numerous of unfamiliar paths and I have no regrets. During each path I learned valuable lessons from the encounters I had and the challenges I faced. Later I applied them to my life.
