My post

Beautiful People,

Yesterday, I quoted H. Jackson Brown’s mother from the book P.S. I Love You who said: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”

I wanted to say a few more words about disappointment and regret because I feel that if we were able to transfer the energy we invest and the efforts we make to avoid them into doing the things we are afraid to do, we would have achieved so much more in life.

Disappointment and regret are bad. They make us feel embarrassed and uncomfortable over our actions. We may have disappointed our spouse or children, our friends or employer, we may have disappointed ourselves. We beat ourselves up and argue that we should have done it differently, we should have not done it at all or we should have known better.

But HOW should we have known better if we haven’t experienced those emotions? I believe that our strong reaction to some feelings was initially designed to allow evolution and growth. While a moderate reaction fades away over time, an intense reaction leads to a long-lasting awareness.

I consider disappointment and regret as learning opportunities. I do feel embarrassed and disappointed when things go the opposite of what I intended, but these feelings have never stopped me from following a new path, a new plan or a new idea.

The worse that can happen is that I’ll feel disappointed again, but you know what? Everyone can survive disappointment, and it is healthier to feel regret (we all need a little reminder that we’re human). Additionally, when things go wrong before they go right we experience a greater appreciation.

Practice makes perfect— I say FAIL. Go ahead feel disappointed, be regretful because it means that you have made an effort, you were courageous, and you have dared. Be proud of your efforts and let go of the results. Over time you’ll find out that you know better, you experienced more from what life has to offer and you evolved into a better person.

Now if you need a bit of inspiration to fail read this article.

XO,
Sharon
