One of my favorite biblical idioms is: “Fathers eat the sour grapes, but the children's teeth are set on edge?” Jeremiah 31:29 and Ezekiel 18:2.
It is a religious-ethical dilemma reviewing how far can the sin of the parent be extended to his offspring? And, are the faults of the parents, not only transferred to the children, but punished in them?
Later in the bible, the verse was clarified and explained: only offspring who will continue to commit the sins of their fathers be punished.
I recalled this verse when I read the The Seattle Times editorial board article, How Immigration Reform Would Help Unlock Human Potential.
It talks about the pending Supreme Court decision regarding President Obama executive action to grant legal status to undocumented children who were born in the United States to undocumented parents or entered the country when they were young children, aka Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
DACA does grant non-immigrant legal status but does not provide a path to citizenship. People who are eligible for DACA relief will be able to apply for social security number and receive renewable 2-year work permit. Those young adults, like Ilse Montes De Oca, the promising young woman mentioned in the article, will be able to achieve better economic opportunity, attain higher education, enroll in health insurance, and participate more in their local communities. They will be able to become contributing members that every society needs.
The Pew Research Center estimated that up to 1.7 million people might be eligible under this policy. 1.7 million Young Adults who are paying for their parents’ wrongdoing.
The bible moral dilemma revolves around issues such as forgiveness, kindness, mercy and grace. I consider it as a social issue more than a philosophical debate:
What kind of society we want to live in or raise our children in? What kind of people we want to be? What values we should protect and what ideas we should reject? What are our priorities?
