My Monday hero is Weili Dai the Director, co-founder and former president of Marvell Technology Group. She is the only woman co-founder of an American semiconductor company.
Weili Dai founded Marvell Semiconductor in 1995 and made it one of the top semiconductor companies in the world. The company ships over one billion chips a year, has $3.7 billion in revenues, and operates worldwide with workforce of more than 7,000 employees.
Dai was born in Shanghai, China, and immigrated to the United States in 1979. She studied computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, and worked as a software developer before she co-founded Marvell Technology Group with her husband.
Dai promoted partnership with the One Laptop Per Child program (OLPC). She advocates for getting more women involved in science and technology and said: "I believe by embracing STEM and leveraging inherent strength of women—the sense of responsibility, passion, compassion, and pride we dedicate to family and community—and applying it to business can make women the X factor in the new era of global growth and prosperity for the ‘Smart Life and Smart Lifestyle.'”
She serves on the boards of the disaster relief organization, Give2Asia, the Global Semiconductor Alliance's (GSA), and TechNet.
Over the years, Dai received numerous awards and recognition including: the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award of Northern California Region (2004), the Gold Stevie Award for Woman of the Year (2013, 2014), the Silicon Valley Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2013), the Gold award as the Best Woman Professional of the Year (2014). Newsweek named Dai one of the "150 Women Who Shake the World”.
In 2015, Dai received the "Keepers of the American Dream" by The National Immigration Forum and National Immigration Forum Action Fund. As of 2015, she is listed as the 95th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes.
The presence of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields is critical not only for attaining gender equality, but also for diversity, which is a key for growth and innovation especially in those fields.
