A couple of weeks ago, I posted my opinion regarding Target's statement related to the bathroom legislation, in which the company gives green light to anyone to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity, not the gender assigned to them at birth.
Immediately after, the American Family Association, a conservative Christian activist group started a petition, which quickly collected more than a million signatures from people pledging to boycott Target over its transgender bathroom policy.
Today, I share with you the troubling consequences of one of the most meaningless, idiotic legislation of the decade (although I admit, it is hard to decide if this legislation is more or less moronic than the Nebraska legislation of drivers on mountains in Nebraska should drive with caution near the right hand edge of the highway...but as it turns out, there are NO mountains in Nebraska)
In a Yahoo News article by Beth Greenfield, Woman Harassed in Bathroom for Appearing Transgender, the brave 22 year-old Aimee Toms had been told she was “disgusting” for being in a women’s public restroom. Instead of going home put lipstick and schedule a plastic surgery to make her look more feminine, she posted a video on Facebook in which she talked about her experience and protested against the senseless legislation.
THE IDEA THAT THE LAW CAN OVERPOWER A PERSON’S RIGHT OF IDENTITY HAS MANY NEGATIVE OUTCOMES ON BOTH THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE COLLECTIVE. The worse of them is related to what happened to Aimee who was judged and shamed for her physical appearance.
In My book, #TheOppositeOfComfortable, I wrote that in the last decade, our society became quicker to judge without knowing the evidences; form opinions based on stereotypes not facts, and promote superficiality over profundity.
I believe this toxic atmosphere influences our representatives. Instead of setting high standards of ethical codes and moral principles by passing laws that promote tolerance, acceptance, and equality they do the opposite.
Aimee Toms is part of our next generation. Take a look how beautiful inside and out the people who will someday replace us are.
Remember that taking an example from a younger person is not an irony. It is a genuine growth.
