Homeopathy and Headaches
Homoeopathy is a natural form of medicine, invented and developed by Doctor Samuel Hahnemann in 1789 in Germany. It is easy to use, non-addictive and doesn't produce side-effects, so it's safe to use at home for common complaints.
One complaint that almost everybody has ever suffered from, is a headache.
It might be caused by:A hangover, The weather (too hot or too cold), Lack of sleep, Too much screen time, Not drinking enough water Too much tea or coffee, Work stress, Relationship worries ......the list is large!
Most people keep painkillers in the house and paracetamol and ibuprofen of the drugs of choice.
But do you know what else your 'headache medication' can do to your body while 'alleviating' your headache?
No Such Thing as a Side-Effect
Side Effects.
We have had this drummed into us by drug marketing that every drug has a side-effect. That there are plusses and minus' of taking a drug, we just have to weigh up the benefits v.s the drawbacks. That the medication will alleviate the problem and the other things it might do to our bodies are immaterial and unimportant...
However, I consider this an important point:There is no such thing as a side-effect.
All medicines have an affect... (on the body)
And they affect all of your bodily systems, not just the pain you're trying to alleviate.
A lot of information is written on the packaging or printed on a leaflet inside the box but have you actually ever read what it says?
Ibuprofen Effects The common side-effects of Ibuprofen are:Nausea-feeling sickVomiting-being sickDiarrhoea-passing loose, watery stoolsIndigestion (also called dyspepsia)-feeling uncomfortable after eatingAbdominal-tummy pain.
Less common side–effects include:Headache (!) DizzinessFluid retention-bloatingRaised blood pressure Gastritis- inflammation of the stomach Duodenal or gastric ulcers - open sores in the digestive system Allergic reactions, such as a rash.Worsening of asthma symptoms by causing bronchospasm- narrowing of the airwaysThere can also be black stools and blood in your vomit indicating that there is bleeding in your stomach.
As you can see from the lists above, the medicine you may be taking for your headache may also affect your digestion, your blood pressure, your skin and your breathing. It can also make you dizzy, nauseous and give you diarrhoea and fluid retention.
How Many and How Much Do You Use? And how many headache tablets do you take in one week?
How many packets do you buy when you go shopping?
How many do you automatically pop in to your shopping basket 'just in case'?
And have you experienced other symptoms such as indigestion from taking too many Ibuprofen tablets and are now taking anti-acid tablets as well?
Have they affected your digestion, breathing or blood pressure?
It's always a good idea to do a drug review. Make a note of how much and how many tablets you use and what they are for and see if you can find other ways to use less or even drop certain medications.
Just because something is freely available and cheap doesn't mean it's good for you.
KNOW YOUR DRUGS!
Individualising Your Headache But what if there was another way of easing your headaches?Another way to alleviate them? What if instead of reaching for the painkillers, you took a few moments to differentiate your headache from all the headaches that could exist and individualised your headache a teeny bit more?
This is what homeopaths do with their client's headaches and other complaints. This is what you can do with your headaches.
The Way You Express it, Not What You've Got Homoeopathic remedies are categorised by the sort of symptoms that they relieve. The type of symptoms and the way they manifest not the disease label.Unlike conventional medicine which says all headaches are the same, we divide headaches into the type of headache and/or the type of person suffering from them.
In my book A Little at a Time, Homeopathy For You and Those You Love I have included different remedies for different types of headaches.
I don't actually suffer from headaches very often but when I do it's generally because I haven't had enough fresh air or water.
My husband gets them quite a bit (I think it's because he doesn't drink enough water) and he knows that some Nux Vomica alleviates his.
Here are three Homeopathic remedies that work very nicely to help certain headaches. They are all made from plants.
Nux Vomica 30c A Nux headache is one where the person is oversensitive to the pain. The scalp is sensitive. They will get a headache if they've been out in the sunshine. It's a congestive headache, associated with haemorrhoids. There is a pressing pain on the vertex (the top or crown of the head) as if a nail is being driven into the head. There can also be a frontal headache, with a desire to press the head against something. It's also the number one remedy to take if your headache is associated with too much alcohol the night before, or from loss of sleep.
Belladonna 30cA Belladonna headache has much throbbing and heat. There are palpitations reverberating in the head and much laboured breathing. The headache can come from suppressed catarrhal flow. The pain is worse from light, noise, sudden movements, lying down and in the afternoon.
Gelsemium 30cA Gelsemium headache is dull, with a heavy ache. There can be a bruised sensation. The headache also has a muscular soreness of the neck and shoulders.
So, there are other ways to alleviate headaches and Homeopathic remedies are offered as a safe, effective alternative that won't give you 'side-effects' or make your body suffer.
