We have a small writing group that meets once a month in my flat. It's high on encouragement, low on serious critique and more about motivation really. We come together to get a zap and I doubt anyone leaves without feeling like adding to their current protect.
We had a new visitor last week and they clearly had ideas but no idea how to start.
It made me reflect on how I get going which was useful for me over the last few days. My thoughts were these. Sometimes you have an idea you love. It might be a scene you've thought through that is so real to you that you can describe it easily. Write out that scene from beginning to end. Imagine the dialog, talk it out in your head and then type it out. Really get into it, enjoy it, make it real. Then . . .
Place yourself somewhere else in the world or the universe (depending on your genre :-) and begin describing how all the characters get to that place for your scene to be worked out. Follow that by telling us what happens after. Hey, you might be on the way to a great story.
Happy writing :-)
