Unfinished: A Personal Journey of Healing, Self-Discovery and Resilience
I recently celebrated a monumental birthday (60 years young to be exact!), which prompted me to ask myself, “So, what does it feel like to be 60?”
Growing up, anyone who was 60 was definitely classified as OLD. But now, upon reaching the age of “OLD,” I simply don’t feel it and I realize that it is only a number. I have known people half my age that I would label old. Not by years lived, but by their attitude towards life in general. My choice is to stay young at heart for whatever time left I have on this earth.
Life does not stand still for anyone and we are all on borrowed time: moments turning into days; into weeks; into months; into years – you get the drift! Why does it seem that the older I get, the faster time goes? Sometimes I just want to put the brakes on and say, “Whoa! Slow down, I need to catch my breath!” But it is relentless.
As I move into my “senior” years, I reflect that I have never been or felt more settled in my own skin and I am grateful for everything that has brought me to this state of well being:
• I am grateful for my husband, my soul mate, and my best friend who loves me for who I am.
• I am grateful for our current dog (and the others that have gone before) that has trained us well and loves us unconditionally.
• I am grateful for my health and for a body that allows me to maintain a high degree of physical fitness; something that I do not take for granted.
• I am grateful to live where I am surrounded by nature and in an environment that feeds and enriches my soul.
• I am grateful for a home that provides comfort and shelter and a kitchen where I can prepare healthy meals.
• I am grateful for my friends that provide me with support, encouragement, honesty and dependability.
• I am grateful for freedom to come and go, to make my own choices and to have my own voice.
• I am grateful for all my tormentors who actually became mentors, forcing me to look inward and grow.
• I am grateful for all my fears that if I acknowledge, will push me out of my comfort zones to experience more freedom.
• I am grateful for the challenges that I have encountered throughout my 60 years; many painful and difficult but circumstances that were paramount to my growth and the key to becoming who I am today.
Birthdays are a gift, a reminder that time is fleeting and how important it is for every one of us to seize the day!
