Keys in the Bible for Understanding God’s Word
Keys of understanding are essential to fully grasp the meaning of the Scriptures. However, the idea of determining these keys can be confusing.
Regular keys unlock rooms, treasure boxes—important things. Similarly, keys in the Bible unlock God’s meaning. To unlock these meanings, one must turn to what is written in the Bible and decipher them.
If you are looking for a more specific example, my book Songs of Solomon Revealed is in itself a type of key to understanding the Bible. A quick read through the text will take readers to some extracts from the Bible, followed by an explanation as to what that chapter or verse signifies.
The first chapter of Songs of Solomon Revealed shows that one of the keys in the Bible are words. In page 16, I share the verse Song 1:2 where the bride says, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.”
Although at face value the word kisses could be understood as literal, it actually expresses a deeper meaning. The Lord “kissing” his people represents the forming of an intimate relationship between man and God.
This interpretation is not merely symbolic. A closer inspection of the word kiss in biblical context led to this association. Notably, the Hebrew word for “kiss” is nashaq, which translates to either “to put together” or “to be equipped with.” Hence, the mention of “kissing” in the Song of Solomon verse has a deeper layer than its literal meaning.
But, one may ask, if there are texts which easily explain the meaning of God’s word, what is the significance of keys in the bible? The answer to that is continuous learning. Although the Scriptures have been around for a very long time, people can still learn something new from them. It could be in the manner of relating it to current events or even uncovering a new idea from the Bible.
Whatever it is, the Bible was written in a manner where some of its parts may be interpreted differently. After all, human understanding has its limitations. With these limitations, finding things like keys to the kingdom in the Bible won’t be easy.
However, aside from words, having the right attitude is also one of the keys to understanding hidden symbols in the Bible. One must be open-minded in learning through others because others may offer a different perspective of the text. Most importantly, one must be able to accept that God may not have revealed everything there is to reveal just yet.
