Inspiration is an illusive quality that can be attained by immersion in your creative self. How is this accomplished? Here's an example: many years ago I was writing in the musical theater field in NYC. I'd just spent three months totally submerged in the writing process, wrote the book and 20 songs (music and lyrics), to an Off-Broadway project. The day I finished the musical, I was sitting at my piano thinking about the show I'd just written, when a musical figure began to emerge from my diddling on the piano. A title came , then the lyric and melody. I wrote the song in 5 minutes complete with a neat arrangement. A few weeks later, Barbra Streisand was looking for material for a new album. I attended the audition, she instantly fell in love with "Draw Me A Circle," the song I'd composed. She ended up recording the song and using it to open one of her early TV Specials. This song was to me an example of inspiration because I had no idea where it came from. I felt it was the result of my total emersion in the creative process when writing the musical and was only possible because of this elevated state of consciousness. I've had other such experiences that resulted in what I feel was superior writing, superior for my usual level of creativity.
