Monstress Volumes 1 & 2
Written by Marjorie Liu
Illustrated by Sana Takeda
I've always loved graphic novels... comic books, but I stopped collecting them ages ago. When the app Comixology came out, I thought I'd jump right in, but it took me a while to find what I was looking for. Then I started The Walking Dead. Once AMC brought out the show, I stopped reading them to not know what was coming. Then I found Saga- LOVE Saga- and now Monstress.
Monstress, written by Marjorie Liu and beautifully illustrated by Sana Takeda tells the story of a girl, but moreso the greed of the world! #element-7140842c-c215-4a02-888f-4a3d2a1d12e9 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Volume 1 is the beginning of a girl's journey. Maiko has placed herself in a pretty sticky situation. Actually, sticky doesn't describe it at all! She's trying to find an answer to why she's so different. Why she is cursed or why she's a monster. When she's not careful, something inside her breaks out and devours life around her. It also takes a piece of her with every attack. She had to find out what it is and why, and how to get it out of her before it takes too much, bringing about her demise.
Along the way, you're given information on the history of the world, how creatures came into being and more. There are half-breeds of the bestial kind, ghosts, magical monsters and more. The thing is, nearly everything leads you to some sort of hell if not careful. Slavery is still alive and well, there are even witches who eat parts of humans in order to hold on to their dark powers.
In Volume 2, the story goes deeper, more engrossing and terribly creative. Make now has to cross what is known as The Wall, for answers. In the meantime, there are people after her, especially the Warlord, who knows of her past and how to use it against her. But in the end, all want to control what's inside Maiko.
Many people didn't enjoy it because they felt Maika wasn't progressing as much as she should have, but we humans, during puberty, take years to function as a proper adult. She's got to endure, along with coexisting with a demon inside her. The more she lets it free, begrudgingly, the more she loses herself.
I plan on moving forward with the rest of the volumes. The storyline can lose pace from time to time, with the historical cat tellings, but they're necessary. Press through those and you'll enjoy the story. I'm off to the next read.
Cheers! Monstress, Vol. 1 & 2
