EXCERPT:
I tried to come up with a plan as the blast hurled us outside, but nothing came to mind. The energy shield had kept us from getting roasted, but I wasn’t optimistic about surviving a 30-story-fall to the street below.
Somehow I’d screwed up again, and it was about to cost me everything. If I’d been alone, I might have chanced the explosion. I’d become heavily fire-resistant as of late. I’d thought it was due to absorbing demon energy, but it seemed I had the elemental my mother had grafted to me to thank for that.
“Thank” is probably the wrong word. I’d use whatever tools I had at my disposal, regardless of how I’d acquired them.
At any rate, that option wasn’t open, because I wasn’t alone. I had Mira and our unborn children to protect. Ideally, I’d help the whole team, but I had to trust Bert had figured something out to protect him and Samantha. Actually, it was probably the other way around.
I could barely hear him shout above the rushing of the wind as we fell. “I can’t reach,” he said. “Get them, babe!”
I pushed the barrier of the energy shield out, trying to make some kind of crude glider. It didn’t do much to slow our fall, but maybe I could aim us somewhere soft.
After a quick adjustment of my energy, I angled toward the side of the building with the glider wings and prepared to use my body as a cushion for Mira. The impact was going to suck, but it was the best thing I could come up with. Right before I hit, a shadow fell over us, and an unearthly shriek filled the night.
It sent an instinctual shiver down my spine, even before I placed the source.
“I can’t grab you unless you drop the shield,” A low, powerful voice bellowed from somewhere above us. “Drop it. Quickly.”
I did, almost instantly. I was face down, so I couldn’t see who was talking, but Mira was smiling in relief. Putting two and two together, I figured it out.
Samantha had come to the rescue.
