1st draft

Several months ago, an acquaintance and fellow book enthusiast named Swapna Krishna reached out to me and graciously asked me to contribute a story to an anthology she was co-editing. I immediately said yes, even though I hadn’t written any fiction since high school, or any work of any length at all since my memoir was published in 2006. But it felt like too special an opportunity to pass up, as intimidated and uncertain as I felt.

The anthology will be called Sword Stone Table, and it will feature tales that reimagine characters and incidents from Arthurian legends, with an emphasis on stories that feature gender-bent, LGBTQIA, neuroatypical, and otherwise diverse casts of characters.

I write very very very slowly. I worked on my idea in my head for months, then finally began composing it about a month ago, getting out a couple of pages here, a couple of pages there. Well, after some real struggles clarifying some of my ideas for the story, and not always knowing how I was going to best express those ideas, at long last, tonight, I sent Swapna my first draft. I just wanted to take a moment to celebrate that fact. I hope Swapna responds well to it, and I look forward to engaging with her notes and feedback, and to diving in on the rewriting process, which I have always found to be much easier than the initial composition process.

That’s all.

Thanks for reading my first-ever official blog post!

Gabi Woohoo! Congratulations on the first milestone done!

Anthony Thank you! It wasn’t easy, but I’m relieved to have done it.

message 3: by Gabi (new)

Gabi I can imagine that the first step is the most difficult one. I'm sure with Swapna's comments the writing process goes into the next gear.

message 4: by Anthony (new)

Anthony I hope and believe it will be so!

Sarah Tate How exciting! Is your story more 'historical', or does it lean more on fantasy? I'm curious to know how they viewed gender and sexuality in Arthurian times.

Jemppu This is so exciting! Congratulations! I've kept thinking how the process is going for you, with such a busy schedule and all the life to live, too. So great to hear you've reached this milestone!

So excited to read it, once the creative journey's done <3<3

Anthony @Sarah I’m not at liberty to talk about the specifics of it at all yet. I don’t know exactly what the source was for the idea that I came up with, but Swapna said yes to it when I pitched it to her. I would like to think it will resonate with folks, but we shall see...

Allison Hurd I am so excited to see a story about some of my favorite characters from the creative mind of someone as insightful as you, Anthony! Congrats on getting the first draft done, looking forward to the final result!

message 9: by Anthony (new)

Anthony I sincerely hope, Allison, that what I have written will speak to you. I know how much The Once and Future King means in your life. Yours will be a response I will eagerly await!

Ah! How infuriatingly intriguing :)

message 11: by Jemppu (new)

Jemppu This premise is making me curious of your own past with these characters, and indeed of the mysteries of finding any specific inspiration in general. Very rousing of thoughts in on itself!

(I also gotta agree with the editing task being a much more relaxed a part to handle; combining and molding already existing elements, rather than creating new.)

message 12: by Alex (new)

Alex Bright Writing is a difficult process, but I'm sure the end product will be wonderful in your case! I look forward to reading it.

Mareike Yaaaay! I'm very much looking forward to this.
Here's to first drafts, editors, and re-writing. (The last of which I sometimes love and sometimes hate, tbh, depending on my daily form.)

Pujashree Oh yayyy! As a baby writer of SF&F fiction, I have been starting and stopping and losing heart in my ability to compress all my feelings into coherent prose and starting excitedly again, for some time now too, so I feel you. Can't wait to read it! I want to make some kind of joke about your "swapna" (dream) coming true, but um, baby writer...so I am just going to go work on writing skillz now, haha!

message 17: by Anthony (new)

Anthony I love learning that her name means “dream.” Thanks for that lovely tidbit! Best of luck with your writing as well.
