Thanks for the enthusiasm. It's much appreciated. Yes, Sugar Bit is the opening chunk of this novel, though the sample I published has been reconsidered, reconfigured, rewritten, etc.. That's the way it seems to go these days.I'm still making my initial editorial passes. The novel is holding up so far.
I have now read it twice (short book) to savor TRP's voice as he leads his cast of characters through the maze that is it's narrative. Viewpoints alternate through the roster of misfits providing tension and more than a little humor as is TRP's wont. I have read everything this author has produced and never been disappointed. I first read him way back with A Short History of a Small Place which is the funniest book I've ever read and followed that with The Last of How It Was, which is one of the most moving. I especially admire how he cares for his characters and yet recognizes all of their shortcomings and foibles. I loved Confederate States. I love TRP's voice and perspective. He deserves a much wider readership! Read this book. As he said: "It's an odd one". Wonderfully odd.

The structure is a bit of a departure, but the book has all of the hallmarks of so many other excellent TR Pearson novels. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments, memorable characters, and some poignant asides.
My favorite quote: "Mad about every little thing had come to be the American way".
Thoroughly enjoyed the alternating viewpoints narrative structure (I think TR was starting to toy with in Brigade). I kept hoping for another character to pop up to give their perspective as I didn't want it to end. Provides a holistic view of the wonderfully written characters as various levels of reliability combine to make those characters even more fully realized.Longtime fan - please keep writing!
Hi Scott,I'm grateful for your good opinion. Yes, this novel was a direct result of the frustrations I had over Brigade. I think I've now done my bit with multiple viewpoints.
The next one is a western and a big, fat thing. With any luck, I'll have it out in the spring.
Happy Holidays.

I'm finishing up the editing but don't expect to have the manuscript in publishable shape for a few weeks yet.
