Virtual visits
The landscape has changed for everyone--especially students. Masks are the norm. There's no more parent volunteers or even lunch in the cafeteria. And there are no more author visits, either. All of us authors have been trying to adapt by offering virtual visits instead. It's such a great way to share our books with students. And it's a great way for students to have someone from the outside pop into their classroom. I've done two virtual visits so far and they've been amazing. We had a couple of technical difficulties with the sound at the beginning, but it resolved itself, thank goodness! I was able to chat with the kids, ask them questions, and answer theirs. They were so excited about What Kids Did and couldn't wait to tell me all the ways they were helping others during the pandemic too. I showed them pictures, told them about how I found the kids, how I wrote the book, and read them a story. Their favourite was the one about a 10-year-old boy named Iyori from Japan, who helped create a virtual Minecraft ceremony so all his friends could graduate. Afterward, the kids wrote me cards thanking me for the visit and telling me how much they liked the book. It was so meaningful and humbling. I feel like I have the best job in the world; like I helped create something that made a difference. Next time I'm feeling disheartened by the pandemic or anything else in life, I'll remember these cards and my purpose.
