Mental toughness is when you can find fuel in an empty tank.

Staying mentally fit is an art. And in times of a pandemic, mental fitness takes a shift from a necessity to a priority. Just like you, i too find my tank empty down to the last bit. Just like you, i too think of giving up many times.

Still, you are here. i am here. Stretching our hands to the corners of the tank. That says something about hope and motivation to keep up with mental fitness.

Here are 3 ways i keep myself mentally strong, fit and fueled. If you too have something to add in the list, do drop it in the comment box.

Meditation

It offers peace and joy, i had heard. But it was late in 2020 when i felt the true calling. i began and right from the first day itself, i felt the difference. i felt calm, collected and closer to myself. Now meditation is an inseparable part of my routine.

How to meditate: Choose a quiet corner. Either plug your ears with any meditational music (easily available on YouTube. App stores also have multiple meditation apps) or sit in silence. Close your eyes. Breathe in and breathe out. Focus on breathing. If your mind wanders, that’s okay. Gently bring it back.  Begin with 5 minutes and slowly increase time and make it to at least 20 to 30 minutes a day.

Here are 7 benefits of meditation and how it leaves an impact on your brain.

Gratitude

An instant recipe of finding fuel in your tank is practicing gratitude every. single. day. Gratitude is possibly the easiest way to stay calm and happy.

Gratitude practice: Every morning and at night before going to bed, say – Thank you, God (or whoever you choose) for this beautiful day!  Count your blessings and be grateful for them.

When i feel anxiety or stressed, i close my eyes and be grateful for everything i have. You can also create a journal where you can write things you are grateful for.

Affirmations

Prior 2020, i sought validation from the outside world. After i began meditating, gratitude and affirmations came along as naturally as blinking eyes. It changed my perspective on validating myself. Now i seek validation within. The best part? It fills, refills and fuels my tank! Amazing, ain't it?

How to do affirmations? Speak to yourself in positive sentences every day. Here is a small list of examples:

i am enough. i am loved. i am successful. i am at peace. i have everything i want. i am beautiful inside out.

Make your own list of affirmations. Choose sentences which begin with ‘I’, ‘I am’., 'I have' etc. Short sentences work better but depends upon you. Always have a positive and encouraging self-talk!

Here are the benefits of affirmations.

Science behind affirmations.

The key to unlock the secret of joy and peace is to wind it yourself but in the right direction! Each one of these three asks only 5 minutes per day. Are you willing to give?
