The last line of my biography reads that I spend a lavish amount of time on the golf courses or on my boat. Don't let this be misleading. I asked my oldest daughter for her insight on my bio. She wrote in jest that I spend an obscene amount of time golfing and fishing. I changed "obscene" to a less graphic word "lavish" to convey an amount of time. The truth is I retired to Pinehurst, N.C. (the Cradle of American golf) specifically to play on their nine golf courses and I try to play several times a week. Also, I own a bass boat which I take out on nearby lakes to bass fish. My life would not meet any threshold of lavish.

I grew up in a military family, with a father that served in Vietnam. I too served in the USNR, so I'm no stranger to the military way of life. I have always had an interest in the Vietnam war, even taking courses on the war as an undergraduate. However, it was my uncle, Charles Raymond, who gave me the ground truth about firefights and daily drudgery of life in the Nam. He served three tours in the 1st Cav, including a tour at Phu Bai where he was under fire bringing supplies up the river to the marines attacking Hue City. Imagine being 20 years old and coping with the real possibility of death every day. Brave men!
