The Final Struggles

The Magicians ConI originally decided to work on Magician’s Con as my second book because I needed more writing experience before going into the sequel. I also wanted to explore further what the world looked like when it was at its peak in magic. The Magician’s Con takes place a few years before the fall of the Highborn, meaning that this fantastical world can be explored further. This made development a challenge but a thrill at the same time.

The story itself was a big factor for me, especially considering where my first story came from to begin with. With storytelling being a passion, it was still difficult to write while battling depression. Still, it wasn’t a want but a need to write, and I was able to work through it. This is why at the beginning of Legacy of the Highborn, you find Destin trapped inside a prison camp. It, in actuality, was about how I was trapped mentally in my depression with a need to break out and escape.

The blessing was that writing Legacy of the Highborn did, in fact, break me of my depression, and I was able to discover that purpose writing originally provided for me. Now I had a blank slate and a chance to write a sequel book, yet I felt that my skills were not quite up to par with where it should be to go after a sequel.

I understood that when writing Legacy of the Highborn, it was to break the six years of battling depression, yet when the book was done, I saw that the story itself had the potential to be a thrill to readers, and therefore pushed to publish it. Luckily with technology, we are, of course, able to go back and rework a few things, which I am in the process of doing to make my first book all the better.

Legacy of the Highborn I didn’t feel was a five-star book. I figured it was a good four-star, and it needed to work up to higher through rewrites. When sitting down to write Magician’s Con, it left me with the question, “What can I do to make this story go from good to great?” After the rewrites and struggles of being an author, I can finally say that we are almost there.

Magician’s Con has been its own mountain to climb with plotting, new characters, and trying to create a compelling story. For this book, I wanted to see what would happen when someone who doesn’t have magic needs to face and overcome those who are powerful and skilled in magic. I love that conflict and situations which can develop, and it challenges me as a writer to figure out how the main character will do this very thing.

I am excited to share more with you as this book continues to develop. We are so close to this release and something that I cannot wait to release. I hope that those reading will love the story as much as I did writing it. Excited to see what is to come.
