Inspiration !

' Find Me In The Darkness ’ was inspired by missing American woman Maura Murray.

In the summer of 2020, I had decided that I was finally going to start writing. I was now retired from my business and wanted to use all of my lifetime knowledge to create stories. I am a huge fan of True crime, Paranormal and crime Fiction. It was quite a nerve wracking experience for me, deciding when I was actually going to start writing and what I was going to write about. Then one afternoon I watched a True Crime mystery about Maura Murray, which immediately drew me in.

My Writing Inspiration Begins ...
Maura was twenty one years old when she went missing in the Winter of 2004. The documentary covered all the mysterious events leading up to her vanishing, but typical of mystery documentaries there often is not a conclusion and you are left still wondering what happened. This is when ideas suddenly started flowing throughout my mind about what my first book was going to be about.

My Idea's Come To Life...
Inspired by Maura, my imagination went into overdrive. I wrote down all the plots, twists and turns that kept taking up all of my attention and wrote them down in a A4 note pad. I wanted to use Maura's disappearance but give it a story. A beginning, a middle and an ending. However Maura is not the only true life inspiration for my novel !

The Second Inspiration…
There is a lovely church in Northumberland that we use to stop off at on our way to the beach. It caught our eye because it incorporates Saxon, Norman and Gothic-style architecture. Our dog Spencer loved to walk around the Churchyard with my husband and myself. The headstones on some of the graves were hundreds of years old. We found out that the church is one of the oldest in Northumberland. When our dog passed away, we did not go back to the church for a few years as it felt sad that Spencer was not with us.

Paranormal Inspiration...
As I was plotting my story, I wanted to include a supernatural element, so I created a character who has psychic abilities. She is called Isabel and blossoms in book one and will continue throughout the series of future books. Then I remembered St Marys and researched it. We went back to the churchyard and took photographs, I soaked up its gothic atmosphere. This place was going in my book...

It Really Is Haunted….
We always felt that the church was a special place when we visited. After I found out about all the hauntings, I realised I had my paranormal story. As with Maura, I wanted to give Tom, who is St Marys most famous ghost, his story. I took a photo of what I imagined his phantom to look like and put him on the cover of 'Find Me In The Darkness giving the title a double meaning for readers !
