Notes from a Lyricist

When I auditioned in August 2017 for the Phoenix Gay Men's Chorus (PHXGMC) a month after a mild heart attack, I knew I'd enjoy the singing and community of men.

Since that moment, I've made many PHXGMC friends and written and published two more books while living in Arizona. Here is my latest.

I Think I'll Prune the Lemon Tree by Mark Johnson

However, I never thought I'd have a chance to write lyrics for the chorus and hear my words--relaying true-and-triumphant stories from members of the Phoenix LGBTQ community--come to life through the voices of friends.

On Tuesday night, it happened.

As we began to rehearse our Mosaic of Voices music (composed beautifully by David E. Weck), I felt the emotion and excitement in the room.

Our concert is Saturday evening, October 8, at the Kroc Center in Phoenix. I'll post more details next month. If you live in the Valley of the Sun, I invite you to join us.

For now, suffice it to say audience members will be moved, stirred by the healing power of beautiful music--and reminded of the importance of community in our chaotic world.

Thank you, Vicki. It's a real thrill to hear my words come to life as music.
