The Schism
As politics drives us further and further apart a void is forming between the intractable opposing sides.
What will fill it?
Isn’t it time for a third or fourth political party to form in this country of divisiveness?
There is a swathe of people whose views are moderate and at each opposing end, the extremes to the left and to the right of Republican and Democratic parties.
President Biden will attempt to soothe the fevered brows of moderates of both parties, but the extremists need to have their voices heard as well. They have a right to, in a country where free speech has devolved into hate speech, and where any opinion will be lambasted as the wrong one to express.
Having only two parties isn’t democracy. There is no real choice. Both opposing sides think they and they alone are correct in their worldview, when, in fact there are many many shades of grey in between.
The Green Party itself never got the traction it needed to be a force. The voting population was not yet ready to jump ship and vote for what would now be termed a “snowflake”. However, the politics of environmental change has become mainstream but who can fill the void left by Nader? He had some great ideas but he failed to ignite the imagination and bring his issues which are now very much at the forefront of our concerns to the bargaining table. He was derided by the media – the most powerful force on earth – and they destroyed him. He was blamed for running in 2000 when it is claimed he stole votes from Al Gore, who of course lost to George Bush.
We need more than one alternative party. Yes, it might be frightening to think of a Neo-Nazi party, or a Green Party, or a Social Democrat Party or whatever. But at least we will have more choice.
I’m all for that.
