What is Hindu Nationalism? How does that correct the concept of modern liberalism?
Let’s start with two inquiries. Answer them. First, can you tell me something beneficial for all the countries of the world but not for your country? I am not asking what is healthy for African countries, what is useful for America or Russia, or what is helpful for European countries. I am saying that among the things which are collectively beneficial for all the nations of the world, is there anything that is not helpful for India?
The second question is, is there anything beneficial to humanity or all the human beings on the earth but harmful only to you as a human being? Here also, I am not saying that for that particular person or the person of that country. What is beneficial for all human beings, and is some of that harmful for you?
No matter how much you think, the final answer you will get is ‘nothing like that.’ It is the idea of ’Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam,’ with its real deep meaning. What is suitable for all is good for me and my country. Invoking every human being to lead a life under this tremendous and eternal idea – is called Sanatan Dharma. And Sanatan Dharma is called the Hindu way of life, that is, the Indian way of life. Hindu is just a word indicating a geographical location. And based on this way of life, the idea of promoting and protecting the global or eternal nation built is called ‘Hindu nationalism.’ That is, Hindu nationalism is an internationalism under the unity of the spiritual quest for universal truth. If I am a ‘Hindu nationalist,’ my nationalism is my internationalism.
If a citizen of any country in the world (including India) says that ‘I am a nationalist,’ he is talking about the protection and promotion of his country, in which he may also want to destroy another country. We saw this in Nazi Germany, which ultimately made the word ‘nationalism’ a bad name. But if a citizen of any country in the world says that ‘I am a Hindu Nationalist,’ it means that he is following the idea of ’Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ mentioned above, and his Nationalism is an Internationalism. He will adopt only those ideas which are beneficial to all humanity, and he will oppose those ideas which are harmful to all society and the world. It is a great and comprehensive way to live life. Being a ‘Hindu Nationalist’ is not just an identity of being an Indian; it is a universal identity of any human being in the world. Then where is the problem? The first problem is that Indians never popularised this idea with this understanding in front of the world.
And the second problem is that the world is trapped in the trap of opposite thinking. That opposite thinking is Liberalism. Let’s see what it is.
Let’s reverse the two questions asked at the beginning of the article. The first question is, is there anything beneficial to one country but not helpful to all the countries of the world? The answer is, ‘Yes, there are many things.’ What is beneficial only to America or Russia only, or China only, and how can it be helpful to the whole world? The second question is, is there anything beneficial to one man but harmful to all men? Again the answer is the same – yes, there are many things. Asking such a question is a joke. But unfortunately, in the modern world, this joke is called ‘being liberal.’ It is also called ‘secularism.’ To protect the interest of one of the entire human community is to protect the interest of the whole community – this is modern liberalism, which liberals of all countries adopt. And because of this, the entire world is in danger. Because someone has considered it in his interest that the whole world should accept what he believes. Otherwise, the others will be killed by him.
The idea of protecting that one person’s interests is a way of imposing slavery on humanity. But that is done by promoting ideas like ‘liberalism,’ ‘secularism,’ and ‘Islamophobia.’ How can feeding one’s selfishness and greed for power benefit all? What is beneficial for all is helpful for one. When we put this idea into practice for a global order, rough ideas like the Islamization of the world and Nazi nationalism automatically get destroyed. It is why such thoughts could never take root in the Indian civilisation of so many thousands of years. These thoughts were always against the way of living in India as ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam.’ If the world has to avoid falling prey to such barbaric thoughts, then it has to reverse this absurd principle of ‘Liberalism’ and adopt the idea of ’Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam.’ The same idea is the basic principle of ‘Hindu nationalism.’ Therefore, being a ‘Hindu Nationalist’ is the highest humanitarian identity of a human being, which respects and accepts all the paths seeking truth but doesn’t allow one to enforce his way onto others.
