Excerpt from the Book: DEFENDING ALEX MURDAUGH Not Guilty by Reasonable Doubt

I have a lot more questions I would have asked Nathan Tuten on the stand for a lot more detail about that party, when Paul discovered his gun was missing, and how Nathan found out it was missing. Did they ever hear of who stole it, or have suspicions? I would have asked if Nathan owned a .300 Blackout, or did he just use the Murdaugh guns. I would have dug deeper into his experiences at Moselle, when living in the cabin. Tell me about how you get to the kennels from the cabin, are there trails behind the cabin to the kennels, shortcuts that he knew of?

Then I have to ask, why did Jim Griffin try to trip up Nathan on the question of the thermal scope.300 Blackout. The questions start like this, Jim Griffin, ‘whose gun did you think got stolen, Paul’s or Buster’s?’ Nathan seemed taken aback by this question with an abrupt response, “I’d assume Paul’s.”

Jim Griffin, “were you aware that the .300 Blackout replacement, did not have a thermal scope?’ Nathan, “if I didn’t know about the gun, then no!” Griffin, “so, you know whether or not this is Buster’s .300 Blackout sitting here in the courtroom?” Tuten angrily quipped back, “that is the gun that I used at Moselle.”

Griffin stops with this line of questioning, mistakenly in my opinion. But the fun doesn’t stop there. I want you to look at the prosecutor’s body language while the first questions started coming in. Then their body language after the questioning starts to get tight, and Tuten gets upset at the question of knowing about the tan .300 Blackout. They went from bored, to concerned and perked up in a matter of seconds. My opinion on this is that something is up with these questions, and Nathan does not like this line of questioning.

Think of it this way. Nathan testified that he and Paul were best friends and talked almost daily by phone. We also know Will Loving, another close friend of Paul and Buster and the Murdaughs, and the Tuten’s and the Gibson’s, and so on. But Paul gets another replacement .300 Blackout in April 2021, and Will Loving and Paul sighted it in near the main house at Moselle, and the first time Nathan had ever heard of Paul even getting another .300 Blackout was at the trial?
