Heights

This story is part of a series of flash fiction which I’ve started to write so I can practice the art form.

The green light from the second sun stung Faris’ eyes as he stared up at the bird standing twenty feet above him. The cliff towered, fearsome.

Faris rubbed at the bruises on his knees and gathered his magic. If he didn’t make it to the bird, there would be no dinner today either.

Magic rushed through his body, strengthening his legs. He pushed off as hard as he could, flying up ten feet.

The bird tittered as Faris came within a few feet of it. However, he crashed down to the rocks with another bruise.

Faris gasped painfully. He only had enough magic for one more try. Just then, he noticed the bird fluttering from branch to branch. He got up again, and instead of jumping up all at once, he used his magic to jump to the nearest rock, balancing precariously. Then to then next, and the next, coming ever closer.

Finally, Faris stood atop the cliff. The bird whisteled next to him, sounding almost proud.
