Outside, a hurricane
The rain plays hopscotch
on the pavement the PLINK
PLINK PLINK pushing
its way through the window. It’s light
as the sun
still shines with the eerie
shadow of something
more sinister, bleary.
Only minutes earlier we sang along
with the wind
as it pampered our skin. The leaves
rustled in accompaniment
as if they were in on the joke … perhaps
they merely borrowed the tune
from us,
singing away another afternoon.
I wake up asleep
on the couch, the pins
in my hand needling me
to move & although the night insists
on darkening our days
this hurricane
roars through the glass claiming
its own pain.
The rough hum of the storm
has replaced the playful song, a rueful
lullaby imploring me
to sleep
to ignore the elements building up outside
to believe a storm is just a breath
a circle
of air before dawn searching for depth.
