Listening to music is all about your feelings. Making music is all about trying to making others feel. For the music maker, the two aims often coincide but making music that others can feel outweighs in importance whatever feelings the music-maker seeks to experience. Whatever makes the listener feel something is all that matters. But if the music-maker feels like he or she can only make music happen if he or she “feels” it for themselves then the result is basically masturbation. There has to be a deliberateness in art to expand outward. And this is why there are some basic rules and standards to work with because these are tried and true. It is the job of the music producer to know these rules and standards and to impose them upon the music under his or her supervision.
