Combining pictures with text to communicate the story

I'm finding that pictures alone don't aways communicate enough story. It often doesn’t give enough information so the picture can connect with people on a deeper level. When I take photos with my camera or do a sketch in my sketchbook, adding description in text form does help to give more context to the picture. Text can tell the reader what has happened before and after the moment in the picture. It can also tell readers what is not displayed in the picture, like emotions.

I'm not saying that pictures can't work alone. It can, but it is more challenging or it might take many pictures in a series to tell a fuller story with context. Think of comics done without words, like the Arrival. More pictures are involved to communicate a sequence. When I want to record things quickly, in a  journalistic way, combining text to pictures does seem to do the job well.

Though I'd love to have daily life being smooth every day, drama tends to pop up. I'm sure that happens for all of us. Writing/drawing it out helps me process things. I'll let this page tell you the details:. This page was drawn mostly on location as it happened but the last part, when I got home:

The above was a couple weeks ago. We went for a follow-up appointment. The paediatrician took a look at photos of Toby's stool (we had to take pictures every time he poops), there were still dry cracked parts. The doctor explained that his intestines have been stretched for so long that it might take awhile for it to go back in size. (But she said there is no guarantee, which worried me). With a stretched intestine, it will take a longer while before he feels he needs to poop, which causes it to get bigger and drier, which causes it to be painful when pooping. We'll keep giving him the larger dose of laxatives, vegetables and lots of water to help his intestines go back to normal size. I'm learning not to be stressed out when such things happen.
