The Astrology of the Hikoboshi Series

Let's talk about something I absolutely adore weaving into my stories: astrology. I’ve always found that using astrological charts is a fantastic shortcut for creating character dynamics that are full of chemistry, tension, and that spark of fated connection. For the Hikoboshi Series, the pairing of Yumi and Rin is one of the most fun, and explosive, I’ve ever written. I don’t usually write my heroines as Air signs, so creating Yumi, a quintessential Gemini, was quite a challenge for me, but her dynamic with Rin, a fiery Aries, made it all worthwhile.
Assuming that Yumi is a Gemini with a Taurus Moon, and Rin is an Aries with a Scorpio Moon, let's take a closer look at what makes these two tick, and why they clash and connect so powerfully.
A Restless Mind, A Steadfast HeartYumi’s Gemini Sun is the first thing you notice about her. She is driven by a relentless curiosity that makes her a brilliant, if reckless, journalist. Gemini is the sign of the messenger, the communicator, and Yumi lives and breathes this energy. She is constantly asking questions, digging for information, and trying to understand the world around her, even when it puts her in immense danger.
When she first arrives on Hikari, a world without a free press, it’s a personal affront to her very nature. Geminis can also be impulsive and hot-headed, and Yumi’s temper is her “worst enemy.” It’s this Gemini impulsiveness that leads her to punch Gen Miyazawa in the ship’s mess hall, an act that gets her confined to her quarters and sets her entire story in motion.
But beneath that whirlwind of Air-sign energy is her Taurus Moon, which grounds her and reveals her deepest needs. The Moon in Taurus craves stability, comfort, and security — all things that are ripped away from her. Her anger at being stranded and made corporate “property” is rooted in this Taurean need for a stable foundation. This placement also explains her deep appreciation for simple, earthly pleasures, most notably her constant craving for noodles and the memory of home-cooked meals.
A Taurus Moon is also incredibly stubborn and fiercely loyal. While her Gemini Sun gives her a quick temper, it’s her Taurus Moon that fuels her protective rage when her family or friends are insulted. It’s this combination that makes her so complex: a restless, fast-talking journalist who is also deeply loyal, stubborn, and just wants a good bowl of noodles to feel safe.
The Warrior's Fire, The Hidden DepthsRin’s Aries Sun is on full display from the moment we meet him. Aries is the sign of the warrior, the initiator, the man of action, and as a kenryōshi, Rin’s entire job is to fight and take decisive action. Aries energy can be impulsive and aggressive, which we see in their very first encounter when he pursues Yumi relentlessly and very nearly drowns her in the river. He doesn't hesitate; he acts. This is also the sign of the pioneer, and we see this in his secret desire to break free from Hikari's oppressive systems. Even his backstory of getting a massive scar from “butsu jumping” as a reckless young man screams of Aries bravado and a love for dangerous thrills.
But the real key to understanding Rin lies in his Scorpio Moon. This is one of the most intense and emotionally profound placements in the zodiac. A Scorpio Moon feels everything to its core, but it keeps those feelings hidden under a tightly controlled surface. This explains why Rin is such a mystery for so long. He’s fiercely private about his past, only slowly revealing the pain of his childhood in an orphanage.
Scorpio is also the sign of loyalty and fierce protection. Once Rin decides Yumi is important to him, his protectiveness is absolute and all-consuming. He spends his life savings to buy her contract and declares, “You’re my freedom, Yumi”. His promise to her later in the series—“You’ll always be safe with me. I promise. You’re my first priority. No matter what”—is a classic Scorpio Moon vow. It’s an all-or-nothing devotion. This combination makes him a warrior (Aries) who is driven by deep, powerful, and often secret emotional currents (Scorpio).
An Explosive Connection: Fire, Air, Earth, and WaterAstrologically, this is a pairing of dynamic energy and intense emotional connection.
The GoodYumi’s Gemini Sun (Air) and Rin’s Aries Sun (Fire) are a classic case of Air fanning the flames of Fire. They stimulate each other intellectually and are drawn to each other's energy. His directness (Aries) is a match for her quick wit (Gemini), creating a dynamic where they are never bored. Their Moon signs, Taurus and Scorpio, are in opposition, which creates a powerful, magnetic attraction. They are two halves of a whole. Her Taurus Moon’s need for steadfast loyalty and physical comfort is something his intensely devoted Scorpio Moon can provide, while his Scorpio Moon’s craving for a deep, unshakable bond is met by her Taurean loyalty. This is the foundation of their profound, if complicated, emotional connection.
The BadThe challenges in this pairing are just as potent. The fixed nature of both their Moon signs (Taurus and Scorpio) means they are incredibly stubborn. When they clash, neither will back down, leading to epic power struggles. This is perfectly illustrated in their early dynamic, where he is her “owner” and she is his “property”—a battle of wills that defines their relationship for a long time. Furthermore, his Scorpio Moon’s need for intense emotional depth can be overwhelming for her Taurus Moon, which prefers peace and simple comfort. At the same time, her Gemini Sun’s changeable nature can frustrate his direct, “let's-get-it-done-now” Aries Sun.
Ultimately, their charts create a relationship that is never simple but is always powerful. They challenge each other, push each other to grow, and form a bond forged in the fires of corporate war and revolution.
I have to say, I truly enjoyed playing with these signs this time around. Exploring the dynamic between a restless, curious Gemini and an intense, passionate Aries was a thrilling journey, and it created a love story that is at the very heart of the Hikoboshi Series.
