A Friend's Untapped Genius

My Brilliant Friend (Neapolitan Novels, #1) My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I had high expectations for this book, but honestly, it left me feeling indifferent. The story of the two competing girls never captivated me. Even during a long flight, I struggled to stay engaged.

To me, the friendship at the heart of the book felt shallow. I didn't sense anything profound or moving. I also didn't feel the Italian atmosphere that so many readers mention. Ultimately, it read more like a straightforward recounting of events than a story that could capture my emotions.

That said, I can see how it might appeal to readers who enjoy slow-paced narratives about women’s relationships and daily life in Italy. Just be aware that it may come across as dull and lacking in emotional resonance.
