Finding a New Game: The Power of Resilience in Rosa’s New Game

In Rosa's New Game, Rosa Kimura is a therapist and soccer star whose perfectly controlled life shatters, forcing her to find resilience in the face of injury, career collapse, and romantic betrayal. Her journey isn't just about healing a torn ligament; it's about rebuilding her identity when the pillars she built it on are kicked out from under her. Oh, I do love to write a character who thinks they have it all figured out, only to have the universe say, “Hold my beer.”
Benched by LifeWhen we first meet Rosa, she’s trapped on the sidelines, both literally and figuratively, by a debilitating knee injury. A passionate soccer player, her entire sense of self is tied to her physical strength and skill. Now, that's been stripped away, leaving her angry, impatient, and frustrated. She reflects on her situation with a familiar sarcasm: “Slow and steady wins the race. Except, in this race, I’m not even allowed on the track.”
This is one of my favorite character setups to explore. Rosa is a therapist, someone whose job is to guide others through stress and burnout. She preaches patience and acceptance, yet she can’t apply any of her own wisdom to her situation. I think we can all relate to being a hypocrite in our own lives sometimes! It’s this internal conflict, this feeling of being a fraud in her own skin, that makes her initial struggle so real. She’s stuck, and she hates it.
When It Rains, It PoursJust as Rosa is grappling with her physical limitations, the rest of her world decides to implode for good measure. Her stable career at the Interstellar Agency is threatened by budget cuts that label her vital work as “non-core.” Then Rhys, the man who gave her a perfect first date before ghosting her into oblivion a year ago, reappears as her new yoga instructor. Talk about a plot twist!
It’s so much fun to pile on the conflict and see how a character reacts. And Rosa, to her credit, doesn’t just crumble. When her entire department is about to be eliminated, she finds her voice and stands up to the Agency Director in a room full of her colleagues: “We are talking about human beings, Director. Their well-being is not a luxury item we can trim when funds get tight. It’s the foundation upon which all our successes are built.” This moment, this act of professional defiance, is the first spark of the fighter she’s forgotten she is.
Of course, the universe isn’t done with her yet. The romantic turmoil with Rhys is compounded by the staggering revelation that her own sister, Demi, interfered and warned him away. Everything Rosa thought she could count on — her body, her job, her family’s support — is thrown into question, leaving her completely adrift.
Finding Strength in Unexpected PlacesRosa’s journey back to herself doesn’t come from a sudden epiphany or a quick fix; it comes from learning to accept support from the most unexpected places. While her sisters Winta and Demi try to help in their own ways, the most profound wisdom comes from her tiny, furry, and incredibly snarky animal pair, Raimei.
After Rosa’s life has officially hit rock bottom, it’s Raimei who offers a dose of powerful perspective. He shares a story of his own past loss and reminds her: “Second chances? They’re not guaranteed… Sometimes, the universe, or fate, or dumb luck, throws you a lifeline.” I cried writing this scene. Sometimes the most important lessons don’t come from experts or therapists, but from the quiet, unwavering love of a companion who sees us at our worst and reminds us of our strength.
This moment with Raimei is the turning point. It helps Rosa see that while she can’t control the rockslides life throws her way, she can control how she chooses to move forward. She learns that true resilience isn’t about being invincible; it’s about finding the strength to be vulnerable and accept help.
Playing a New GameArmed with this new perspective, Rosa stops being a passive victim of her circumstances and starts making active choices. She confronts Rhys, not with anger, but with a raw honesty that sets new terms for their relationship. She tells him, “I’m not going to run away, and I’m not going to let other people determine what’s best for me anymore, either.” She takes back her power, refusing to let his choices or her family’s meddling define her future.
This newfound strength carries over into every aspect of her life. She's someone who's healing, adapting, and finding joy in the game again. She’s not just recovering; she’s evolving.
