The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese

Dull and dragged out. Too long and no real story. Now that I forced myself to read on, I'm surprised at how far away from being the audience for this book that I am. I mean, who likes women being butchered every single time they have a baby? Who enjoys most of the children in their book dying horrible deaths? Who relishes the main characters dying in horrible ways -burnt to death, train crashes and so on? And the graphic descriptions of surgery every few chapters? Lovely. And the worst thing was, I didn't even care about the deaths. I'm going to stop even attempting books over 500 pages because they are all self-absorbed rubbish which needs a savage edit.
