Filthy Animals
Indiana authorities investigated the woman who falsely reported Pete Buttigieg to the police for child abuse and decided not to press charges. The reason? She is deeply mentally ill, abuses drugs and alcohol, and suffers from paranoid delusions. The authorities basically decided she wasn't competent enough to stand trial.
Hmmmm . . . Okay. This woman is already in a prison more miserable than any real one. I'm not sure if the Buttigieg family would be able to forgive her (or if =I= would, if she had put me through something like this), nor do I feel they should be required to forgive her. I do, however, understand the authorities' thinking on this. Sort of. Mostly.
But I =do= believe that the POLICE should be investigated and prosecuted. This woman called the police in Indiana, and, based on a brief 911 call and no follow-up whatsoever, they alerted the police in Michigan to a supposed case of CSA EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW THIS WOMAN HAD A HISTORY OF DELUSIONS AND DRUG ABUSE.
The Michigan police rushed over to the Buttigieg home and took the children away from their parents, again without a shred of follow-up. Yes, CPS is required to act on information they get, but they are also expected to investigate properly before breaking a family apart, even temporarily, and a cursory check would have revealed (actually, did reveal) that the accusations were nothing but literal paranoid delusion.
CPS are NOT allowed to take children away from their parents based on an unfounded, uninvestigated accusation. At absolute minimum, CPS should have interviewed the accuser before acting. Had they done so, they would have realized within five minutes that this woman wasn't in her right mind. They did not do this, and they ripped a family apart and put them through a nightmare of terror.
The police in Indiana, the police in Michigan, and Child Protective Services need to be investigated and prosecuted. And a big part of the investigation needs to focus on homophobia. It seems pretty clear that the only reason Traverse City's CPS so blatantly violated basic procedure to go after the Buttigiegs is that they're a same-sex couple. Although Michigan's Elliot Larson Civil Rights Act includes protections for LGBTQ+ people, northern Michigan is notoriously homophobic, and it would absolutely be on point for the authorities up there to go after the Buttigieg family because they hate gay men.
Fortunately, Michigan AG Dana Nessel is a formidable presence, and although Indiana has stopped investigating (without, I might add, looking into the police violation of basic procedure), Nessel has not.
I hope she holds the cops and CPS workers to account. You can tell me that cops and CPS workers are overworked and underpaid all you want. You will never convince me that the people who tortured the Buttigieg family are anything but filthy, evil animals who willingly and deliberately caused an innocent family great pain. They should be put in the same jail cell they wanted to put the Buttigiegs into.
