I reread
Farewell Sidonia by Erich Hackl this weekend. The novella has been in English translation since 1991, and maybe you have read it. If you haven't, I recommend it. It's the story of a gypsy baby fostered by an unassuming Austrian couple during Hitler's rise, with all the paranoia that surrounded that era, that reminds us still what hatred does, even in the name of communal norms.
