Riding the Rocket

Picture Have you learned any tips and tricks to give yourself more 'rocket days' than 'despair and agony days?' What's the longest you've stayed at it when you got on a roll and the juices were flowing? How long do you keep slugging away before you give up on the days that the agony of realization that your writing sucks is just too much to bear? Is there someone you call to talk you up from the depths and down from the heights (as if we ever WANT to come down!) Do you have a comfort food or a celebration drink you fall back on for your ups and downs?

I know that writing isn't brain surgery, and the world would keep spinning if the stories in our head didn't get put down in pen and ink, but can you think of any other career choice that has as many highs and lows that seemingly have no rhyme or reason. It's as if we are a kite flying through a sky of words, at the whim of the wind whether we will soar towards the clouds today or careen with death-defying speed towards an unforgiving ground.

Such indeed is the life of a writer.
