On the Casting Couch
Someone asked me recently who I would choose to play the different parts in "Behind the Grey" if it were made into a movie. The following is the list that I came up with. I didn't actually have most of these actors and actresses in my head while I was writing, but they are the ones that most closely fit the faces that I came to know so well. I read a quote recently that stated "No two people read the same book" and I've found that's true. I've had people comment mostly on the humor in "Behind the Grey" (I didn't plan on that, and that remark surprised me) and others focused on the "excellent balance" between the views of the North and South (I tried very hard to be unbiased and to show it as I believe it really was). I purposely didn't mention anyone's ages, leaving that open to the reader's perception. In my head, Alexandria would have been in her early to mid-twenties, about the same as Ellen, with Pearl, Kane and Sullivan a bit older. Sullivan being the oldest of the lot.
So, who played the parts in the movie that ran in your head while you were reading the book? The following closely fit how I saw the cast and crew.
Alexandria: Sarah Roemer (She has that tomboy look that would allow her to cross the sex-line believably, but she is beautiful as a woman)
Verbena: Patricia Belcher (US Atty Julian on “Bones”...she has Verbena's "sass" down pat!)
Kane: Stephen Moyer (The first time I saw an episode of "True Blood" and Vampire Bill started talking I turned to Clark and said "Ohmigosh....that's Kane!")
Pearl: Jennifer Connelly (She can get this look in her eye that says she has known pain, but she knows how to put it behind her when there's a job to be done)
Sullivan: David Boreanaz (From the first time I saw him playing Seely Booth on "Bones" I have loved the way he looks. Once I had him in my head as Sullivan, I could hear every word he spoke and the lines almost wrote themselves.)
Ellen: Ashley Greene (The "girl next door" with attitude.)
Beka: Sierra Aylina McClain (A little younger than the rest, if you see a picture of her with very little makeup I think you'll see Beka's face)
Rafe: W. Earl Brown (I could definitely see him playing a very bad guy?)

A peek into the glamorous life of a writer. Ha. If by glamor you mean donkey poop and second hand hairball gifts from the cat. And dog hair dust bunnies.
