February Updates

This month took off like a vampire in mating season to put it bluntly. It came, I blinked, and then it was gone. I am much better this month (knock on wood) thanks to some new anti-biotics and a lot of yogurt smoothies.

February is always crazy because this is birthday month in my family. My mom's, my aunt's, my best friend's, my mom's best friend's, and my own all take place within a couple weeks of each other, thus I have again not been blogging much.

My mother's birthday took us down to Eugene, where my adopted sister is going to college. The campus down there is old, huge, and beautiful. I kept seeing a story scene play out there. I want to find a place in one of my books to write about it. Sis made us a vegan tofu peanut butter pie, which I expected to be one of those situations where you say you like it then quietly excuse yourself to the bathroom where you spit it out. It was no such situation. I in fact could not stop eating vegan peanut butter pie and am looking into making it for a future party event.

On our last day in Eugene I discovered the Cascade Raptor Center was located just a few miles out of town. I have been DYING to go there ever since I heard about it, as I am a giant bird nerd, and all but dragged my mother there.

Have to say it was the most amazing place I think I've ever been. CRC is a place for injured wild birds to recover as well as where they're taken when they need emergency surgery. I got to see hawks, falcons, and a ton of different owls up close. AMAZING place! Exceeded my expectations of awesomeness.

However, between my love of birds and seeing the center, I found myself looking into bird care and adoption when I came home. As an early birthday present, my mom and I split the cost of a baby green cheek conure (he's like a mini parrot, real small). He is currently sitting on my shoulder and-... great, he just broke my sweater zipper. Oh well. We named him Petri, inspired by The Land Before Time movies. He is very interested in my keyboard and cell phone, and has to eat or drink out of whatever you are eating or drinking. It's been a hassel to keep him out of things he shouldn't eat/drink. He's quiet except when left by himself. He is also an early riser, whereas I am no morning glory. We've had some differences... However, I look forward to seeing how our relationship progresses. Conures live up to 30 years, and while I tend to see my mortality in this little bird I think he will be an interesting life partner.

On a new note, I added a twist into my sci-fi novel that I did not expect. I am hopping up and down waiting for some time off from work to write more. I feel like I have so much work to do and not enough time.

Speaking of time, I've gotta run. My birthday cake should be ready at the bakery by now so long as the rude woman I ordered it from yesterday put it in. I was very polite, yet she seemed like she could care less about me ordering from her, nor did she seem to care that I am spending a good deal of money for a nice party cake at her bakery when I could've chosen another. I was never bothered by peoples' customer service skills until I started working in customer service. Why do people have to be so unfriendly? Oh well.

Until next time,

S.B.
