Author Talk and Book Signing

I'm honored to be speaking at the Belden Cromwell Library on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30. My talk is usually called "One Voice Led to Another," because when I had to retire from singing for health reasons, I turned to writing. Crestmont was born. The irony is that I have returned to singing, I am happy to say. Does that mean I should name the talk "One Voice Led to Another and Another"?

Here is a nice press release the library sent out.

Jeanne Hi Holly!

Maybe you can call it "One voice healed another". I can imagine you are very happy to be singing again!

Jeanne Yes, thanks, Holly. My Boston daughter and her babies are in town this week, so we are all enjoying shared family time. I live in Seattle so I don't get to see her often enough.
I have been writing learn-to-read apps. They give kids a strong phonics basis for decoding. Luckily, the developer who contacted me has found very good people to do the art work and programming. Our little team has created two very successful apps now. Reading Raven and Reading Raven Vol. 2 are helping kids learn in the U.S., Canada, and around the world.
I have always been a paper-and-pencil type of teacher and learner, but I see some kids learning from this who have been unable to learn with traditional methods. Yay!
My own writing, unfortunately, has slowed down, but I still plug away a bit at a time.
How is Crestmont doing? I haven't been on Goodreads much in recent months.

I have 2 eight year old granddaughters. I wonder if they are learning via Raven. I shall have to ask. Enjoy your family time.

Jeanne Your granddaughters are probably reading chapter books by now. Reading Raven is for beginners and for readers who need a better grasp of phonics.
It is used in homes and schools, but so far, it's available only for iPad and iPhone. The intention is to help young readers build a strong foundation in phonics and English spelling patterns so they will be able to decode unfamiliar words. When they have these skills, they read accurately.
By third grade, their reading should be very accurate. Then, they need to read widely and often to develop fluency. Have you read any part of Crestmont to them?

Holly Weiss Good for you, Jeanne. Yes, they are reading chapter books now. I will read them some of Crestmont this summer.
